1) FILM / TELEVISION
STUTZ - (Netflix)
“In candid conversations with actor Jonah Hill, leading psychiatrist Phil Stutz explores his early life experiences and unique, visual model of therapy.” - Netflix
I thoroughly enjoyed Jonah’s documentation and vulnerable conversations with his psychiatrist Phil Stutz. This doc gives deep insight into actionable methods of working on one’s mental health, derived by the creative mind of Stutz. Jonah’s true ambition with this project was to make sure these methods could be shared to the world, not just in a private office, where many can hardly afford to enter into.
2) MUSIC / PODCASTS
WILDLIFE FREEWAY
From the Bandcamp website:
“Wildlife Freeway is the musical projects of multi-disciplinary creative Sunny A Atema. Using piano, voice, guitar, melodica, kalimba and various instruments, Wildlife Freeway music and performances weave stories and sounds of Earth beings stepping out of time into the present musical moving stillness. Atema has toured with Kyp Malone, Erin Durant, and many other musical movers. Most recently she recorded her album with Alex Ebert in New Orleans which will be out soon.”
For those of you unaware, Alex Ebert is the the lead singer of the band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Perhaps some big things lie in wait for Wildlife Freeway.
To date, Clouds is Sunny’s biggest hit, and there is a valid reason for that. Listen here:
3) ART
Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” - (Great Art Explained, Youtube)
This one is about a guy who cut off his own ear. So, there’s that.
4) BOOKS / WRITING
The Practice of Groundedness: A Transformative Path to Success That Feeds--Not Crushes--Your Soul - (By Brad Stulberg)
I’m generally not a huge fan of recommending “self-help” books, but after diving into this book by Brad Stulberg, I feel obliged to share it. For anyone feeling overwhelmed by their current situation in life, or overly stressed by the “keep-up” culture with social media, self-promotion, job burnout, and so many other situations that keep us from achieving or true potential, then I would highly recommend to start with this book. At the point of writing this, I am only about 1/4 of the way through the book, but I can already tell that it’s not gimmicky, it’s truthful. It’s actionable. And it’s “grounded” in reality.
“In The Practice of Groundedness, bestselling author Brad Stulberg offers a path from which peak performance and well-being and fulfillment can emerge and prevail for a lifetime. At the heart of this model is groundedness—a practice that values presence over rote productivity, accepts that progress is nonlinear, and prioritizes long-term values and fulfillment over short-term gain. To be grounded is to possess a firm and unwavering foundation, an internal strength and self-confidence that sustains you through ups and downs and from which deep and enduring success can be found. Groundedness does not eliminate ambition and striving; rather, it situates these qualities and channels them in more meaningful ways.” - Amazon website

5) PHOTOGRAPHY / CINEMATOGRAPHY
HOYTE VAN HOYTEMA - (Dutch-Swedish Cinematographer)
If you don’t know his name, that’s okay. But I can almost guarantee that you have seen his work. And it is breathtaking. I’ll just go ahead and list a few of Hoyte’s cinematic achievements behind the camera: Nope, Tenet, Interstellar, Dunkirk, The Fighter, Ad Astra, James Bond’s Spectre, Her, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Let the Right One In. Not the worst resume in Hollywood I would say.
The AlterCine channel on Youtube does a wonderful job splicing together visuals, and audio recordings of some Hoyte interviews over the years. It’s a nice deep dive into his rise as a cinematographer, as well as a few golden nuggets of info for any filmmakers/cinematographers out there, or even just the average fan interested in the magic of movie making.
